TIPS AND TRICKS

Step 1: Before even thinking about meta tags and robots, you must pick five keywords or 5 keyword-phrases to focus on. You want these text bits all over your pages. If your site is simple, use these five on every page. If you have a large site, pick 5 for each page.

You want to use them in sentences, and use them logically. Do not just place them all over the website. If need be, use the "alt" text for images.

Now you want to use them in your META description and META title of your page. Go to your HTML view and use your keywords.

Next step: is META keywords. Look at your pages and grab the text that you want people to find you by. Also think of adding your location in the meta keywords. You can also put incorrect spellings of the words here, (you have misspelled in the search engine too, right?) Do not place similar words together. Say you have "bbq accessories" and "bbq tools" , add a few different keywords between these two phrases.

One vital thing to remember: if you have large pages containing alot of text, keep in mind that your keywords and phrases should be in the top 100 words!!!

ROBOTS ??

What is a search engine robot? When you submit your site to a search engine, the "robot" or "spider" will send a request to your website in order to "grab" text from your pages. The information that the robot grabs will be stored in a database and will be called up in a search. These robots update their database every 2-8 weeks, so all new content you add to your site will come up in the search engine about 2-8 weeks after you add it (depending on the timeframe of their regular indexing).

Most robots will only index text/HTML pages. If you have graphics on your site in which text is presented, robots will not grab that text from your site. Make sure that you have actual text/HTML that includes your keywords. Robots also cannot "grab" information from most dynamically generated database sites.

Robots will not index pages that are not linked within your website. If you have pages on your server that are not linked to a main page of your site, the robot will not find it.

You can "tell" the robot not to index a certain page, and to not follow the links on that page. Insert a meta tag in the head of that page that looks like this:
<META name="ROBOTS" content="NOINDEX,NOFOLLOW">

So think of it this way: you submit your URL to the search engine, the robot "walks" through and follows every link from the first page, to the second page, and all the links on that page, until it grabs every linked page. A "robot" is a great visitor! It looks at everything you have on your site! ;-)
